Whenever I read a story like this one inThe Guardian I wonder what it implies about Neanderthal speech. I'm sure they spoke, spoke pretty well, but what did they talk about? Feelings, ideas, or did they stick to practical things? They cooked food. Fire is older than the split between our lineage and theirs, so the proof that they cooked food is not too amazing. But they are a mystery. So like us and yet gone.
