After a weekend of watching baseball's regular season come to a close I will be back with a new post on Monday morning.
But I noticed that last weekend this blog had very heavy traffic even without a weekend post. If you have stumbled upon the site, don't let my absence discourage you. I particularly recommend this week's posts headed What Evolved? (Parts 1, 2, and 3). Here I argue for a humanist position that the evolution of language was not a great step forward in machinelike computational skills, but an advance in social perception via joint attention. One implication of this position is that all those books that survey the evolution of language by examining the "language" of bees, bird songs, and animal vocalizations were missing the point.
