Our surviving biological relatives went their separate ways from us six million years ago. When did the capacity for vocal imitation and learning evolve? Maybe 100 thousand years ago, maybe five million years ago.

Or maybe more than six million years ago, but interacted with other factors to cause decreased fitness in other branches.
