"'Bonding' through babbling" as a pre-condition on the origin of communicative intent. You quote the authors of the article in question thus: "It is widely considered that socially-ruled communicative behaviour...may have been a crucial step in the co-evolution of language and social life." Uhh, yeah. But the issue of emotional bonding via grooming is orthogonal to the issue of the origin of communicative intent, given that grooming-related babbling is absent of communicative intent.

The point of replacing grooming with babbling was to retain a bonding mechanism. Once babbling was established the human lineage had a feature that could evolve into oral communication. The long process is (1) decline of hair (2) rise of babbling (3) the rise of communicative motivation.
